  • Title An Evening with the Sydney Symphony - A Reserve
  • Presenter Sir Charles Mackerras
  • Organisation Sydney Symphony Orchestra
  • Presenters Bio

Sir Charles Mackerras, one of the world’s leading interpreters of the music of Janáček, Dvořák and Smetana, was instrumental in bringing Czech music to our concert halls. Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony is darker in mood than its siblings, reflecting the composer’s uneasy state of mind and the political turmoil of the time. Smetana traces the course of the Moldau River through the Bohemian countryside and Prague, a shimmering, majestic flood of uplifting music. The fanfares of Janáček’s Sinfonietta celebrate the 1908 declaration of Czech independence with music of life-affirming joy.

Sir Charles’ association with the Sydney Symphony began at the age of 15 as an oboist and continued as Chief Conductor (1982-85). He conducted the first performance at the Sydney Opera House. He has forged a career defined by meticulous scholarship, leading to electrifying performances in collaboration with the world’s greatest orchestras and musicians.

‘a Mackerras performance invariably has energy, pace, bounce, clarity, shape. With his unique gift for getting music moving, there’s no slacking under his baton.’ - Rupert Christiansen, music critic
